Addressing Opioid Safety Risks in Hospitals

Friday, September 28, 2012 from 1:30pm - 3:00pm ET

Program Overview:
Opioids are involved in an increasing number of medication error reports submitted to the ISMP National Medication Error Reporting Program and other error reporting programs. Last month The Joint Commission published a Sentinel Event Alert addressing the safe use of opioids in hospitals. This class of high-alert drugs has been implicated in adverse drug events resulting in serious patient harm, fatalities and sentinel event reports. There are a number of causes and patient risk factors that contribute to adverse events with opioids. Some organizations have begun to recognize these risks but may not have developed effective strategies for reducing the potential for patient harm. Others may not be aware of the number of opioid-related events occurring in their institutions because they are not visible through the usual medication event reporting system. In this presentation, participants will learn how to take actions to improve medication safety with opioid analgesics based on the recommendations from The Joint Commission and ISMP.
